Singing For Alzheimer’s Day

Recently, our talented care home choir took to the stage at our local pub in Swindon for a very special performance to mark World Alzheimer’s Day.

We were joined by Trudy, a volunteer accordionist whose playing lifted the mood, and by pianist Alla, who accompanied the choir alongside our activity coordinator. Our residents sang with real heart, and drew attention from locals, who cheered and donated. The applause, smiles and kind words made our performers feel like true stars.

Jayne, one of our residents, said: "It was nice to do something different. I hope we were in tune!" she added with a smile. "It was so nice to do something like that with my friends, and to be with everybody."

Meaningful events and activities like this are part of good care, not extras. They give residents something to look forward to, prepare for and talk about afterwards, and they help keep life feeling full and connected. Music plays a special part. Familiar songs can bring back memories, lift spirits and help people express themselves, while singing alongside friends builds a sense of togetherness. Performing in front of an audience adds pride and confidence, and reminds everyone that our residents are talented people with plenty to share.

Taking an event into the community also helps break down barriers. When residents and local people share an afternoon of music, it encourages understanding, raises awareness and shows that people receiving care remain valued members of their community.

Every penny donated will help the Alzheimer's Society continue its important work. Thank you to everyone who came along, donated and cheered our residents on. We look forward to many more moments like this!
