Ten Tiny Chicks Bring Big Joy to Our Care Home

There was a real buzz of excitement at Ridgeway Rise Care Home when we welcomed 10 little eggs, ready to hatch. What began as an educational activity quickly became something far more meaningful, bringing residents and visitors together to share in the wonder of new life.

From Eggs to Chicks

Residents, colleagues and visitors became fascinated by the journey from tiny eggs to lively little chickens, watching with excitement as each chick hatched and began to grow. Residents chose the names, and before long the chicks began to show their own personalities.

The chicks quickly became the focal point of our home. Residents loved watching the chicks grow day by day, from seeing their feathers develop to watching them explore their surroundings and listening to their cheerful little sounds. There was always something new to discover and something to talk about together.

Caring for Our Little Visitors

Residents took turns helping to feed the chickens and clean their box, giving everyone the opportunity to be involved in their daily care. These small acts of responsibility brought purpose and a real sense of connection to the experience.

Sharing a Special Memory Together

Perhaps the most special part of the experience was the memories the chicks brought to life. For many residents, seeing and caring for the chicks reminded them of their younger years, particularly those who had grown up on farms or had experience keeping animals.

The chicks sparked wonderful conversations about childhood and animals residents had once cared for and the jobs they used to do. Memories that may not have come up in everyday conversation returned naturally as residents watched the chicks, and it was lovely to hear these stories shared not only between residents and staff, but with visitors too.

Learning Across Generations

We were also delighted to welcome our regular childminder visits throughout the experience. The children were fascinated by the chicks and enjoyed learning how eggs hatch, how chicks grow and what they need to stay healthy.

The children had the opportunity to gently hold the little birds and help make sure they had food and clean water. They were able to ask questions and discover something new, while our residents shared their own memories and experiences of looking after animals. It was a lovely example of how much different generations can learn from one another.

The Happy Chicks Company, which arranged the experience, also prepared an activity book for children and adults to embrace the experience fully.

A Lasting Impact

Although the chicks were small, their impact on Ridgeway Rise was anything but. The experience brought joy, conversation, purpose, learning and treasured memories into everyday life, giving residents something to look forward to and talk about together.

Most importantly, it reminded us that meaningful activities don’t always need to be complicated. Sometimes, a box of eggs and ten tiny chicks can create some of the most wonderful moments. From the excitement of the first hatch to watching the chicks grow, our little visitors certainly made themselves at home.
