At Ridgeway Rise Care Home, meaningful moments are often found in the simplest of gatherings. One such example is The Rat Pack Men’s Club, a much-loved weekly group that continues to bring residents together for connection and plenty of good humour. Each session offers a relaxed and welcoming space where friendships are strengthened and memories are shared, helping residents feel truly at home within our community.

Every meeting begins with a gentle catch-up on current headlines and local news. These conversations encourage residents to stay connected with the world around them while offering a natural opportunity to share opinions and experiences. Each session includes a 'Question of the Day', which is designed to spark reminiscence and discussion. Last week’s question asked what our members’ parents did during the Second World War and led to particularly moving and insightful conversations. Residents spoke openly about family memories, wartime resilience and the stories passed down through generations, creating a sense of shared history and understanding within the group.

Personal stories are at the heart of The Rat Pack. Recently, one of our residents Ray kindly shared his own experiences of serving in the army and brought along a collection of remarkable photographs from his time overseas. His talk was met with genuine interest and appreciation, and fellow members were proud to thank him for his service. Moments like these help create strong bonds and ensure everyone feels valued and listened to.

To keep the atmosphere light and enjoyable, quizzes and games are often woven into the sessions. Residents recently took part in a 1960s television and film quiz, which proved both entertaining and impressive and the group showed just how sharp their memories remain. Other popular activities include guessing classic car badges and taking part in themed challenges that encourage friendly competition and laughter.

Topical conversations are always welcome, whether reflecting on moments from history or discussing upcoming occasions such as Memorial Weekend. These discussions are enjoyed in good spirits, often accompanied by a cold beer and a packet of crisps, creating a familiar and comfortable social setting that many residents fondly recognise.

The Rat Pack Men’s Club continues to be a highlight of the week at Ridgeway Rise. It offers far more than an activity, providing a sense of belonging and companionship that plays an important role in residents’ wellbeing.
